Revital Cohen and Tuur van Balen - 75 Watt

Marks’ Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers says that 'a labourer over the course of an 8-hour day can sustain an average output of about 75 watts'.

Revital Cohen en Tuur van Balen's project 75 Watt is a product made in China whose only function is to choreograph its own assembly. Cohen and van Balen documented the assembly of 40 of their objects in a factory in Zhongshan, China.

The industrialisation of society is often equated with progress, but while new industrial products may bring conveniences to their users, they also imply physical consequences for the factory workers who manufacture them.

Choreography by Alexander Whitley. Supported by Arts Council England, Flemish Authorities, Ask4Me Group, Zhongshan City White Horse Electric Company, FACT, V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media and workspacebrussels. external link, Vimeo
